Parade Marshal

Definition

A Parade Marshal oversees the safe movement and orderly progression of a parade.

Parade Marshals will frequently be seen riding in cars throughout a parade to help communicate problems with floats or tactors along the route and keep the parade rolling at the proper pace.

History

The position developed as Carnival organizations expanded and required greater logistical coordination.

Origins

Derived from military and ceremonial marshal traditions.

Evolution

Today's marshals coordinate with police, city officials, float lieutenants, and krewe leadership.
