Social Aid & Pleasure Club

Definition

A community organization devoted to fellowship, charitable work, and preserving African American cultural traditions, particularly second-line parades.

History

These clubs emerged in the nineteenth century to provide mutual aid, insurance, and social support.

Origins

Created where traditional institutions often excluded African Americans.

Over time they became central to New Orleans second-line culture.

Modern Use

Today they continue sponsoring parades, charitable activities, and neighborhood events.
